SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (22-23-1, 15-9 WCC) on Tuesday night struck first for an early lead but could not hang on to secure a midweek non-conference victory, falling to UC Irvine (31-14, 12-9 Big West) by a 10–2 margin at Fowler Park in what marked the Toreros' final home game of 2023.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Gabe D'Arcy got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, then Ian Blazier added on in the bottom of the second with an RBI groundout to give USD a 2-0 advantage.
- The Anteaters responded with a run in the top of the third on an RBI single to cut their deficit to 2-1, then took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single.
- UCI added on by scoring once in the sixth, three times in the seventh, and six times in the eighth to create a 10-2 lead that the Toreros could not overcome.
ON THE MOUND
- The Toreros used 12 pitchers to get through Tuesday night's contest, starting things off with an inning from Jack Bunnell before Aídan Gonzalez, Mikiah Negrete, Nick Suspenzi, Tristan LaMaison, Drake Frize, Garrett Rennie, James Sashin, Mason Schmidt, Ryan Kysar, Chase Minor, and JD Goodcase took the mound.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Rennie led USD with a team-high 1.2 innings pitched against UC Irvine.
- Suspenzi paced the pitching staff with two strikeouts.
- Angelo Peraza had a team-high two hits on Tuesday, followed by James Arakawa, D'Arcy, Austin Smith, Jack Gurevitch, and Andrew Semo, who all recorded a single hit. Semo was also hit by a pitch.
- D'Arcy and Blazier tallied the Toreros' lone two RBIs.
- Dustin Allen drew USD's only walk and was hit by a pitch.
