Addition of Hertzog and Lane Completes Freshman Class

Incoming middle blocker and setter round out group of four newcomers for San Diego volleyball

SAN DIEGO — Head coach Jennifer Petrie on Wednesday afternoon announced the addition of two incoming freshmen who will join the San Diego volleyball team for the 2023 season.

The Toreros are set to welcome middle blocker Liv Hertzog (Long Beach, California) and setter Tatum Lane (San Pedro, California).

LIV HERTZOG: Middle Blocker // Long Beach, California // Mater Dei High School

HIGH SCHOOL:
  • 2022 Trinity League MVP
  • 2022 All-CIF First Team
  • 2021 All-Trinity League First Team
  • Ranked No. 6 among all California girls volleyball players in total blocks
  • Helped her team back-to-back Trinity League Championships as a junior/senior
  • Reached the CIF Final match as a junior and reached the CIF Semifinal as a senior
CLUB:
  • Played for Mizuno Long Beach

TATUM LANE: Setter // San Pedro, California // Palos Verdes High School

HIGH SCHOOL:
  • Was selected to 2022 All-Bay League First Team and 2021 All-Bay League Second Team
  • Tallied over 650 assists as a senior as she helped Palos Verdes win the 2022 CIF Division I Regional Championship and finish as the 2022 CIF Division I State Runner-Up
  • Recorded 53 assists and five kills in the 2022 CIF Regional Semifinal game
  • Received Palos Verdes High School's "Mike Boyd Most Outstanding Captain Award"
  • Earned the 2022 Pursuing Victory with Honor award in the CIF Division I State Finals
  • Named to the Daily Breeze All-Area Team alongside AVCA All-America and AVCA Phenom Watchlist honors
  • Also played beach volleyball for Palos Verdes, earning All-Bay League Second Team Honors

  • Played for Surfside Volleyball

Hertzog and Lane will join fellow freshmen Nemo Beach and Ella Durham on a Torero team that includes nine returners from USD's 2022 Final Four squad, including 2022 AVCA Pacific South All-Region and VolleyballMag.com All-American Honorable Mention Leyla Blackwell. Transfers Anni Evans (Setter, Nebraska), and Amber Stivrins (Outside Hitter, Georgia) have been added to the roster as well.

San Diego won 31 games last year (including a perfect 18-0 West Coast Conference record) and reached the NCAA National Semifinal for the first time ever after achieving a No. 2 national ranking, marking the most successful season in program history.

The Toreros will begin their 2023 season in August.
