SAN DIEGO – San Diego women's tennis head coach
Nadia Abdala has added another honor to her sensational first season as head coach, as the ITA has announced her as the winner of the Wilson/ITA Southwest Region Coach of the Year award.
Â
Abdala helped lead the Toreros to new heights during the 2022-23 season, as five players took home at least one All-WCC Team honor. The Toreros were ranked as high as No. 17 in the nation in February and went 13-11 overall, reaching the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011.
Â
The Toreros also reached the ITA Indoor National Championships, beating ranked opponents Georgia Tech and California on the way to qualifying.
Â
Under Abdala's guidance, the doubles pairing of
Kailey Evans and
Elizabeth Goldsmith became the first Torero duo to reach the round of 16 at NCAA Doubles Championship since
Heather Polumbus andÂ
Krista Manning in 2001. For her efforts, Abdala was also named the WCC Coach of the Year on April 26.
