Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Toreros Outlast Portland on the Road Sunday

PORTLAND, Ore. –  San Diego women's tennis' 5-2 win at Portland took nearly five and half hours but the Toreros' second straight win to start conference play wasn't as close as the match length may indicate.

"It was a great team win today," said first year assistant coach Rafael "Rafa" Martinez. "Portland competed really well, especially in the top singles, but we stayed composed in the key moments. We handled the pressure better, stayed steady and that's what allowed us to outlast them and take control of the match."

The Sunday affair taking place on just three courts kicked off at 10 a.m. with a dominant doubles point for ITA No. 45 San Diego. The freshman pairing of Vilma Krebs Hyllested and Maria Shmakova took to main court for the first time and didn't skip a beat, winning 6-1. Sophomore Hannah Read and freshman Ines Leon weren't far behind, winning 6-3.

In singles play, the top three singles spots started first. First, junior Charlotte Keitel doubled down with a 7-5, 6-2 win on main court. Then, ITA No. 109 in singles Read doubled down with a 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 comeback win.

Krebs Hyllested proved the Toreros' continued success within the fine margins with a tiebreak win of her own, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) victory to clinch the road win for the Toreros.

The remaining matches, starting at the conclusion of each of the first three, would play out, however. With the dual result already Shmakova retired after a commanding 6-1 first set win and a 3-2 lead in the second, giving the Pilots their first point of the day.

Leon claimed the point back, however, marching to a calm 6-2, 6-3 win, her second straight. A defeat to the host at No. 6 singles settled the final score at 5-2 in favor of the Toreros.
