SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's soccer program (0-1-0, 0-0-0 WCC) dropped their season-opening game, falling 4-0 to No. 11 Stanford (1-0-0, 0-0-0 PAC-12) on Thursday night at Torero Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros got off to a strong start in front of an excited crowd on Thursday night, as Olivia Stone helped generate some early offense.
- Both sides were up to the task and traded blows throughout the first 30 minutes.
- A deep looping shot from the Cardinal in the 39th minute gave them an early lead, as the Toreros trailed 1-0 at the half.
- In the 49th minute, the Toreros got one of their best chances of the game, as Brianna Pearson fed Stone with a perfectly placed through ball, but the Stanford goalkeeper made a sliding, kick-save.
- A pair of Stanford goals in a span of one minute helped put the game out of reach for San Diego, as the Toreros were unable to hold off their nationally-ranked opponents.
- Additional shots on target from Stone and Bella Piete did not break through the Cardinal defense, and the Cardinal would go on to score a late fourth goal.
