Matchup With Seattle Awaits Women’s Soccer on Thursday

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's soccer program (0-1-1, 0-0-0 WCC) heads out on the road for the first time in the 2023 season, opening a two-game Pacific Northwest swing with a game at Seattle (1-1-0, 0-0-0 WAC) on Thursday at 7 p.m.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Toreros outshot UC Riverside 18-4 on Saturday, but were unable to break through in what was ultimately a 0-0 draw.
  • Goalkeeper Sophine Kevorkian recorded the shutout with two saves and the freshmen center back duo of Kylie Perez and Kamryn Simpson were poised and limited the Highlanders to minimal opportunities over a full 90 minutes apiece.
 
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • San Diego is 1-1 all-time against the Redhawks and are meeting for the first time since 2021, when Seattle earned an overtime win in Torero Stadium.
  • A few current players made an impact in the game two years ago, with Sara Evans notching an assist to headline the group.   
  • The Toreros have added the No. 40 incoming class of players in the country according to TopDrawerSoccer, adding 12 newcomers with eight as freshmen and another four as transfers.
  • Freshmen Mikayla Abrenica (No. 71) and Simpson (No. 131) earned national rankings from TopDrawerSoccer as incoming recruits and lead a freshman class with a strong youth soccer pedigree.
  • Joining from the college ranks are graduate transfer Olivia Stone (Northwestern and Vanderbilt), former Arkansas midfielder Lauren Tanner, an NCAA Division II All-American midfielder in Lexi Zandonella-Arasa and Coronado native Aba Dunbar (Notre Dame).
 
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Kevorkian tallied the first shutout of the season against UC Riverside and now has four in her young career.
  • Perez and Kevorkian are the only two Toreros to play every minute of the season so far.
  • San Diego is playing just it's fifth game against current members of the WAC are 2-1-1 all-time against the conference.
