SEATTLE, Wash. – The San Diego women's soccer program (1-1-1, 0-0-0 WCC) opened the road slate with a key victory, outlasting Seattle (1-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC), 1-0, on Thursday evening at Championship Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- While the game started quickly for San Diego with an ambitious shot by Maronne Suzuki from deep outside the box that was tipped over the crossbar, it was a largely cagey affair through the first half.
- Minimal shots found their way on target for both sides, despite Sophine Kevorkian having to make an alert stop in the 31st minute on a chance that also grazed the post.
- However, the Toreros were quick to capitalize on a break out, as Ashley Wright flew down the lefthand side of the pitch, before crossing in a ball that found the feet of Lexi Zandonella-Arasa.
- Zandonella-Arasa made one touch, before getting a shot off in tight that beat the Seattle goalkeeper and gave San Diego a 1-0 advantage, just 33 minutes into the game.
- After a pair of early corner kicks for the Toreros in the second half, Seattle was able to control more possession in the remaining time.
- Nevertheless, the Toreros were up to the task defensively, forcing a number of shots off target and playing stout team defense.
- The freshmen center back duo of Kylie Perez and Kamryn Simpson played much of the game and were active throughout the evening, sweeping away transition chances and clearing out the box.
- Seattle earned their last top chance of the game in the 78th minute, but Kevorkian made a relatively comfortable save.
