HONOLULU — No. 13 San Diego volleyball (0-2, 0-0 WCC) fought hard to force a fourth set on Saturday night but dropped a 3-1 decision to Hawaii, falling to the Rainbow Wahine (2-0, 0-0 Big West) at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center as part of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - Hawaii, 27-25
- Hawaii started off the first set hot, racing out to a 8-2 lead before San Diego called the first timeout of the match.
- The Toreros built momentum as the set progressed, scoring on back-to-back points after Amber Stivrins found her mark and Olivia Bennett notched a service ace to cut the deficit to 8-4.
- Haylee Stoner pulled USD within two at 11-9 with a kill before the Rainbow Wahine punctuated a lengthy run with back-to-back service aces, forcing another USD timeout as the Hawaii lead stretched to 17-11.
- A flurry of kills from Amber Stivrins, Kylie Pries, and Stoner brought USD back within two at 19-17 before an error from the Rainbow Wahine and one more strike from Stivrins tied the score at 19-19.
- Ties ensued at 20-20, 21-21, and 22-22 before Nemo Beach ripped back-to-back kills to give the Toreros a 24-22 advantage.Â
- Hawaii tied it at 24-24, then Leyla Blackwell hammered a kill home to make it 25-24 in San Diego's favor
- The Rainbow Wahine then finished the frame on a 3-0 run, earning themselves a 27-25 win in the set and a 1-0 advantage in the match.
Second Set - Hawaii, 25-22
- A back-and-forth battle comprised the beginning of Saturday night's second set before a service ace from Pries and a kill from Beach put USD up 8-5.
- Blackwell and Beach teamed up for a combo block to make it 12-9 in USD's favor, then Pries found her mark to give her team a three-point, 15-12 advantage heading into a media timeout
- Stoner demolished a kill out of the break to push the San Diego lead to 16-12 before Pries came up big again, notching a kill to move the score to 17-13.
- After a 19-19 tie, Olivia Bennett secured a service ace to extend the Toreros' advantage to 21-19.
- Pries brought USD within one at 23-22 with a kill, but Hawaii finished the frame with three straight points to secure a 25-22 victory in set two, pulling ahead by a 2-0 margin in the match.
Third Set - No. 13 USD, 25-18
- Olivia Bennett gave USD a boost as the third set got underway, recording a service ace to give her team an early 1-0 lead.
- Both teams battled back and forth through the third set's early stages before Blackwell put San Diego up 9-8 margin with a kill.
- Another service ace from Bennett gave the Toreros a 15-9 lead, then Pries capped a 7-0 San Diego run with a kill to make it 16-9 in the Toreros' favor.
- Stoner came through with a kill to earn her team a 21-14 lead, but Hawaii fought back to make it 21-17.
- Beach ripped a kill to make it 23-18, then a Hawaii attack error brought the third set to match point at 24-18.
- Stivrins then found her mark to close it out, pushing the match to a fourth set as USD prevailed by a 25-18 margin in the third to make the match score 3-1 in favor of Hawaii.
Fourth Set -Â Hawaii, 25-22
- USD jumped out to an early 1-0 and had the score tied at 8-8 after a combo block from Stivrins and Stoner, but fell behind by 15-11 margin into the media timeout.
- Hawaii came out of the break strong, establishing a 17-11 to force a San Diego timeout.Â
- USD stormed back across the fourth set's final stages, pulling within two on two occasions (21-19 and 22-20) on a combo block from Pries and Blackwell and a kill from Pries.
- Pries kept the deficit at two with a kill to make it 23-21, then Stoner staved off a match point to bring the score to 24-22.
- Hawaii finished with a kill to earn a 25-22 win in the fourth, taking home a 3-1 win in the match.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Pries led the way for the USD offense with 13 kills, followed by Beach and Stoner with 10 apiece.
- Beach has now recorded 10 kills in each of her first two college matches.
- Setter Alex Hoglund set a new career high with 38 assists.
- Libero Madi Allen set a new career high with 16 digs.
- Blackwell led the USD roster with five block assists.
