SEATTLE, Wash. – The San Diego men's soccer program (2-0-0, 0-0-0 WCC), asserted themselves from the beginning and went on to defeat No. 6 Washington (1-1-0, 0-0-0 PAC-12), 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Husky Soccer Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Toreros came out of the gate buzzing again, pressing the Huskies early and often.
- Despite this, neither side could break through with a quality chance for much of the opening half.
- The game started to open up late in the frame, as Rhys Gourdie laced a shot in the 40th minute that Huskies goalkeeper Jaden Bowton had to be sharp on and save.
- Late in the first half, the Huskies committed a foul that set up a quality set piece opportunity for the Toreros.
- Kevin Pena took charge and delivered a crossing ball into the box that freshman Oliver Rhoades made no mistake with, burying it for a 1-0 lead with just seconds left in the first half.
- The Huskies turned up the heat in the second half, outshooting the Toreros 7-4.
- Much of the half was spent in the Toreros own end, but goalkeeper Luis Ludosan was up to the task.
- A strong defensive stand in the 73rd minute pulled the ball off the line and kept the score line at 1-0.
- After holding off the Huskies once again, the Toreros executed a break out, as Rhoades and Christian Vigil exchanged passes, before Vigil delivered a picturesque cross to the feet of Cesar Bahena, who volleyed it home for a 2-0 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining.
- The Toreros would hold on from there, keeping the Huskies from recording a shot in the final 10 minutes.
