SAN DIEGO – The No. 12 San Diego men's soccer program (2-1-0, 0-0-0 WCC) got a second half goal to tie the match, but were unable to hold on, falling to CSUN (1-0-2, Big West) on Friday night at Torero Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In what proved to be a physical affair from the beginning, the Matadors got the first quality shot, forcing Luis Ludosan to make a diving save to his left.
- The Toreros would get several quality chances throughout the first half, including a shot by Kevin Pena which scraped the crossbar from a severe angle in the 35th minute.
- However, the Matadors proved to be opportunistic, beating Ludosan through traffic on a low grounder by Jorge Solaranzo to make it 1-0.
- After trailing at the break, the Toreros came out quickly in the second half, pressing the issue and the Matadors defense.
- San Diego got their break in the 49th minute, as Vicente Ayala won a header off a goal kick that set up Mason Tunbridge, who delivered a cross that deflected off the sliding Matadors goalkeeper to a wide-open Cesar Bahena, who tied the game at 1-1.
- The momentum swung in the Toreros favor, as they continued to press forward.
- Ayala was stopped by the Matador keeper in the 51st minute and Rhys Gourdie had a shot hit the crossbar in the 54th minute.
- A red card on CSUN's on Martin Palinic gave the Toreros added chances by going up a man in the 64th minute.
- However, despite a robust offensive attack, CSUN was able to get a transition goal from Levin Gerhardt in the 81st minute and put it away with a goal from Jamar Ricketts in the 85th minute to make it 3-1.
