SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's soccer program (1-3-1, 0-0-0 WCC) were undone by a late penalty kick, falling to New Mexico (2-0-2, 0-0-0 MWC), 1-0, on Thursday night at Torero Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game opened quickly as both sides earned some early chances.
- Sophine Kevorkian opened with a pair of saves in the first five minutes, and Sara Evans got a chance shortly thereafter that was stopped.
- New Mexico nearly took the lead in the 30th minute, as a shot from outside the box by Paris Dalton rang off the crossbar, keeping the game knotted at 0-0.
- The game opened up dramatically in the second half, with end-to-end action.
- A deep shot from New Mexico's Sophia Roberts bounced off the right post in the 52nd minute.
- San Diego would respond, getting multiple chances in tight on New Mexico's goalkeeper Alli Davis.
- Olivia Stone roped a shot in the 62nd minute that was stopped but left a rebound for Brianna Pearson, who nearly gave San Diego the lead but was stopped again by Davis.
- In the 68th minute, the Toreros nearly did it again, as Kylie Smith fed Evans with a sublime through ball that was stopped by Davis, who came well off her line for a sliding save.
- Just 30 seconds later, the Lobos drew a penalty shot on the other end and Brynn Boeyink gave them the lead.
- Lauren Tanner would get one more chance in the 81st minute, but Davis made a save to secure a win for the Lobos.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Aba Dunbar and Emma Thielbahr each made their first collegiate starts in the loss.
- Kevorkian tallied seven saves in net and now has 24, which is ahead of where she stood last season through her first five games. Kevorkian would go on to set the San Diego single season saves record in 2022.
