FULLERTON, Calif. – Despite a career high in saves from
Sophine Kevorkian, the San Diego women's soccer program (1-4-1, 0-0-0 WCC) were unable to hold off Cal State Fullerton (1-3-3, 0-0-0 Big West) falling, 1-0, on Thursday night at Titan Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Thursday's contest started out as a deliberate affair, with each side only recording a combined three shots on goal in the opening half.
- The second half opened with a brisk pace, forcing Kevorkian to be sharp in net.
- The sophomore made a diving save to her left in the 55th minute, but was beaten off a corner kick by Kaylin Raibon in the 56th to give Fullerton a 1-0 lead.
- Nevertheless, Kevorkian was sharp the entire second half as she fended off 24 shots from the Titans in the second half and 31 in the game.
- Several strong chances for the Titans were thwarted by Kevorkian, who finished the game with a career-high 14 saves, including 12 in the second half alone, beating her previous high of 11.
- The best chance of the game for the Toreros would come in the 76th minute, as Emma Thielbahr played a through ball to Sara Evans and over two defenders.
- Evans had a free run at the goal, but was stopped by the Fullerton goalkeeper to preserve their 1-0 lead.
- Despite some late momentum for an equalizer, the Toreros were ultimately stifled.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Kate Sealy made her collegiate debut in the loss, playing 25 minutes.
- Josefine Schlichting also made her season debut after returning from injury.
- Kevorkian's 14 saves are the most by a Torero since Ellyn Casto had 17 against BYU on Mar. 24, 2021.
