SAN DIEGO – Behind a historic offensive performance, the San Diego men's soccer program (4-1-1, 0-0-0 WCC) rolled to a 6-1 victory over George Washington (2-2-2, 0-0-0 A-10 on Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game opened up with a bang, as the Toreros struck first, just six and a half minutes into the game.
- Off a Torero corner kick from Kevin Pena, a defensive clearance by George Washington found Ethan Warne, who headed it back to Matteo Gasperoni, who delivered a bicycle kick into the net for a 1-0 lead.
- The pressure from the Toreros only continued, as Warne connected for his second assist of the game, feeding Mason Tunbridge on an over the top through ball.
- Tunbridge beat the defense up the pitch and buried it past the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute.
- On defense, the Toreros were stout, allowing no shots in the first half.
- San Diego would pour on the attack in the second half, with pristine shot accuracy.
- After putting the pressure on the Revolutionaries defense, the Toreros forced them into a poor clearance that hit the back of Rhys Gourdie and the ball landed towards Samy Kanaan.
- Kanaan made the defense miss and caught the George Washington goalkeeper guessing the wrong direction, scoring his third goal of the season to make it 3-0.
- Just over eight minutes later, the Toreros pounced on another George Washington error, as Cesar Bahena stole an errant pass and took it by himself for another goal to make it 4-0 in the 63rd minute.
- The next Torero shot would prove just as efficient, as Christian Vigil scored off a rebound from a Denis Kelmendi cross to make it 5-0.
- While the Revolutionaries would get one back off a penalty kick via a handball in the box, Vigil would add on some insurance in the final minute of the game with his second of the afternoon off a feed from Steven Ramirez.
