Back Line Shines in Men’s Soccer’s Win Over California Baptist

SAN DIEGO – The defense of the No. 22 San Diego men's soccer program (5-1-1, 0-0-0 WCC) shined on the offensive end on Wednesday night, as the Toreros defeated California Baptist (1-4-1, 0-0-0 WAC), 2-0, at Torero Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Despite a wide-open start of play that featured end-to-end action, shots on goal were at a premium in the opening half for both teams.
  • Samy Kanaan and Rhys Gourdie delivered early chances, while the Toreros limited the Lancers to just two shots in the first half.
  • San Diego was able to strike first, late in the second half, as Kevin Pena set in motion a highly successful set piece off a corner kick.
  • Pena fed Ethan Warne, who flicked the ball across the box to Trevor Dillon, who beat the Lancers goalkeeper through his legs for a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute.
  • The Toreros turned up the pressure in the second half and made the visitors pay on another set piece in the 56th minute.
  • Josh Martinez took the corner kick and found the head of Dillon, who headed it down, before Owen Walz flicked it past the goalkeeper to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Goalkeeper Luis Ludosan was forced to make his biggest save of the night just 26 seconds after the goal, as he made a diving save to his left on a Georg Bjarnason header.
  • Dillon nearly extended his big night later in the half, as he nearly buried another corner kick ball in the 76th minute, but was stopped by the goalkeeper and then the crossbar on the rebound.
  • Despite a flurry of CBU shots late in the game, each one was blocked by the stout Torero defense to preserve the shutout.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Volodymyr Kubrakov made his collegiate debut, playing 14 minutes.
  • The Toreros are now 10-2-1 in their last 13 games with seven shutouts, dating back to Oct. 22, 2022.
  • Walz scored the first goal of his collegiate career in the victory.
  • Ludosan recorded his second shutout as a Torero, making three saves.
