Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Baxter’s Goal Not Enough as Women’s Soccer Falls to California

SAN DIEGO – An early goal was not enough, as the San Diego women's soccer program (1-7-1, 0-0-0 WCC) fell, 2-1, to California (3-3-2, 0-0-0 PAC-12) on Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Toreros were able to come out of the gate quickly, showing aggressiveness on both offense and defense.
  • California earned the first chance of the game, as Karlie Lema dribbled around Sophine Kevorkian, but Brianna Pearson was up to the task, clearing Lema's shot off the line in the 15th minute.
  • Olivia Stone nearly gave the Toreros their first goal just seconds later, off a cross from Talei Moodie, but her header went just wide.
  • Lema had another chance just minutes later, but Kevorkian made a strong save on a free run for Lema.
  • For the remainder of the half, the Toreros locked in on the defensive end, holding the Golden Bears offense in check.
  • After some strong defense, Katie Baxter stole the ball on the left-hand side of the pitch and took it herself down the length of the field.
  • The senior knifed her way into the box, where the ball took a deflection off Sara Evans and a defender, before landing back on Baxter's feet.
  • Baxter tucked a first time shot into corner past the Golden Bears goalkeeper to give San Diego a 1-0 lead in the 44th minute.
  • Baxter nearly added another goal in the 48th minute, getting a cross from Evans and forcing California's goalkeeper to make another save.
  • However, Mia Fontana equalized for California in the 54th minute.
  • While both teams battled the remainder of the game, the Golden Bears ultimately were able to secure a winner in the 69th minute.
