Zandonella-Arasa Scores, But Women’s Soccer Falls at LMU

LOS ANGELES – Despite opening the scoring for the second straight game, the San Diego women's soccer program (1-8-1, 0-0-0 WCC) were unable to finish off the victory, falling 2-1 at LMU (6-5-0, 0-0-0 WCC) in a non-conference matchup at Sullivan Field on Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • For the second straight game, the Toreros were the first team to strike.
  • The Toreros were able to manufacture a chance from thin air, as Jenn Hashimoto delivered a perfect through ball from her own back line.
  • Lexi Zandonella-Arasa was the recipient of the pass, as she successfully won the ball and made one move before slotting a shot through the five-hole of the LMU goalkeeper to give San Diego a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
  • However, the Lions immediately struck back, scoring just 11 seconds later on a shot from Jennessa Groves.
  • LMU was able to strike one more time in the first half, as Jai Smith added the go-ahead goal in the 22nd minute.
  • For the remainder of the half, Sophine Kevorkian kept San Diego in the game, making five saves following the goal.
  • The Toreros came out hot in the second half, outshooting the Lions 8-7.
  • Katie Baxter nearly had the game-tying goal, as she laced a shot towards the bottom right of the net, but the LMU goalkeeper made a sparkling save.
  • While Kevorkian was making more strong saves, the Toreros kept pressuring the Lions defense.
  • Tamia Graham had an opportunity of her own, getting a shot off in tight, but the LMU goalkeeper made a positional save.
  • Despite late pressure, including three blocked shots in the 88th minute alone, the Toreros were unable to complete the comeback.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • After 10 saves on the night, Kevorkian (154) moved past McKenna Tollack (151) to take over sole possession of ninth place on the San Diego all-time saves list. Next up is Karen Cook (162) in eighth.
  • Kevorkian tallied the fourth 10-save or more effort of her career.
  • Hashimoto recorded the first assist and point of her collegiate career in the loss.
