Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 12 Men’s Soccer Cruises to 3-0 Win Over Cal Poly

SAN DIEGO – Behind a strong offensive attack, the No. 12 San Diego men's soccer program (3-1-0, 0-0-0 WCC) rolled their way to a victory on Monday night, defeating Cal Poly (0-3-0, 0-0-0 Big West), 3-0, at Torero Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Toreros got out of the gate quickly, capitalizing on their first golden chance of the evening just under nine minutes into the game.
  • A corner kick by Mason Tunbridge was cleared out of the box right back to him and he made no mistake with his second chance, placing it perfectly on the head of Ethan Warne for a 1-0 lead.
  • The defense would support the rest of the team for the remainder of the night, including freshman goalkeeper Donovan Parisian, who made his first collegiate appearance.
  • Parisian tallied his first save on a shot slightly to his right in the 21st minute, but the defense would hold strong, allowing no further shots on goal.
  • While Trevor Dillon and Owen Walz played all 90 minutes, the Toreros also mix-and-matched to give the Mustangs different looks, as Warne, Ryan Cedeno and Owen Wiebe helped man the back line.
  • After leading 1-0 at half, the offensive attack picked up further for San Diego in the second half.
  • Christian Vigil and Oliver Rhoades tallied some early shots, before Rhoades had an attempt that was blocked to set up a corner kick.
  • Once again, the first attempt, taken by Rhoades, was unsuccessful, but the Toreros were unfazed.
  • Samy Kanaan tracked down the cleared ball and ripped a shot that took a deflection off a Mustangs defender and went into the back of the net, giving San Diego a 2-0 lead in the 63rd minute.
  • The Toreros would put the game out of reach later in the frame.
  • Walz delivered a cross-field through ball that found Tunbridge in the 83rd minute.
  • The London, England, native ran a give-and-go with Wiebe in the box, before chipping an outside-of-the-foot ball across the box to a diving Steven Ramirez, who headed in the game-sealing goal.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Warne and Ramirez each tallied their first goal in a Torero uniform in the victory.
  • Tunbridge's dominance against Cal Poly continued, as the redshirt senior now has eight points in two career games against the Mustangs.
  • Tunbridge became the first Torero since Nicklas Clausen on Oct. 31, 2021 to record a multi-assist game.
  • Sami Tsipena made his collegiate debut in the win.
  • Parisian became one of just six freshman goalkeepers in the nation to record a shutout this season and one of four to do it in their collegiate debut, making one save in his first appearance.
