PORTLAND — San Diego volleyball (7-6, 3-0 WCC) on Saturday afternoon utilized a balanced, efficient approach to earn its third consecutive sweep and its seventh win in its last nine matches, taking down Portland (6-10, 1-3 WCC) in straight sets at the Chiles Center to conclude its Pacific Northwest road trip in style.
The Toreros beat the Pilots 25-18 in set one, earned a 25-17 win in Saturday's second set, and prevailed 25-16 in the third to remain undefeated in West Coast Conference play.
Kylie Pries paced the match with 10 kills, turning in the most strongest performance of her 2023 season to date as USD out-hit Portland .338 to .083.
Leyla Blackwell anchored the San Diego defense with a match-high four blocks, including one solo effort.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set - San Diego, 25-18
- Portland started Saturday afternoon's match off in strong fashion, establishing an early lead that it maintained until a service ace from Olivia Bennett knotted the score at 11.
- Bennett's ace was part of a 7-0 San Diego run that prompted a Portland timeout and ultimately vaulted the Toreros ahead by a 14-11 margin.
- The Pilots were within four down the stretch but got no closer, suffering a 25-18 defeat to the Toreros in set one after Pries notched a service ace and Haylee Stoner and Amber Stivrins teamed up for a combo block to close things out and put USD up 1-0 in the match.
Second Set - San Diego, 25-17
- Aided by an early solo block and kill from Blackwell alongside kills from Kylie Pries and Nemo Beach, San Diego began the second set on a 7-2 run.
- Stoner then keyed off a 4-0 USD run with a kill, moving the score to 15-8 in the Toreros' favor before the match paused for a media timeout.
- A few points later, a service ace from Stivrins made it 17-9, prompting another timeout — this time from the Pilots.
- A Portland error brought things to set point before Stivrins found her mark again with a kill, earning San Diego a 25-17 win in the second set that pushed it ahead 2-0 in the match.
Third Set - San Diego, 25-16
- The Toreros started Saturday's third and final set as it did the first two: with an early lead.
- Isadora Tercariol notched a service ace, Pries and Beach hammered kills, and Stoner and Tercariol teamed up for a combo block, leading to a 9-5 USD advantage as the frame neared its midpoint.
- Portland pulled within four at 12-8 on a service ace of its own before San Diego ripped off a flurry of points to re-establish a sizable 18-10 lead.
- The Pilots were back within six at 22-16 down the stretch but got no closer, with San Diego securing a 25-16 win in the set and a 3-0 sweep in the match after Stivrins, Pries, and Blackwell recorded kills to close the contest on a 3-0 run.

- Pries led the match with her most dynamic offensive performance of the season to date, hitting .562 as she racked up 10 kills and tied the match high with two service aces.
- Blackwell hit .444 while compiling five kills and a match-high four blocks (one solo).
- Tercariol paced all players with 29 assists, also adding a kill, a service ace, six digs, and a block assist.
- San Diego has now won 21 consecutive WCC matches dating back to the beginning of its 2022 conference schedule.
