SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (4-11, 0-2 WCC) heads back out on the road for a pair of WCC matchups, traveling to Portland (9-7, 1-1 WCC) and No. 16 Gonzaga (14-2, 1-0 WCC) on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
The Toreros will face the Pilots on Thursday at 6 p.m., before facing the Zags on Saturday at 2 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
- The Toreros held a halftime advantage, but were unable to hang on, ultimately falling 67-59 at Saint Mary's on Jan. 6.
- Kasey Neubert continued her dominant season with her sixth double-double, notching a season-high 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Toreros offense.
OPPONENT HISTORY
- The Toreros and Pilots have played to a tight all-time series, with the Toreros holding a 47-36 advantage.
- San Diego is hoping to carry the positive momentum from last season, after defeating the future WCC Champions in the last meeting on Feb. 25, 2023.
- In the all-time series against Gonzaga, San Diego is aiming to snap a 14-game skid and trail 23-52 overall.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
- A key determining factor for the success of the Toreros is the disbursement of scoring, as the team has won all four of their games when at least three or more players score in double figures.
- Veronica Sheffey ranks third in the WCC and 32nd in the nation in assists (78) and 43rd nationally in assists per game (5.2).
- Her start in the assist category is potentially historic, as only two Toreros have ever averaged over five assists per game over a full season (Amanda Rego (twice) and Lori Morris).
- In addition, Sheffey continues to rank among the top five in the WCC in assist/turnover ratio, free throw attempts, made free throws and free throw percentage.
- Neubert continues to average nearly a double-double per game and has six over 11 games this season. She ranks 37th nationally and second in the WCC in double-doubles.
- Harsimran Kaur ranks second in the WCC in blocks (20) and third in blocks per game (1.33).
- Three of the team's four wins have come when the Toreros shoot over 50 percent from the field as a unit.
