Men’s Tennis Set for ITA Kickoff Weekend

SAN DIEGO – Following the postponement of their opener against LMU, the San Diego men's tennis program (0-0, 0-0 WCC) will be back in action this week, traveling north to the campus of USC for the ITA Kickoff Weekend on Saturday and Sunday at Marks Stadium.

The Toreros will open with Texas Tech (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) on Saturday at 11 a.m., with the opportunity to play either No. 7 USC (1-0, 0-0 PAC-12) or SMU (4-1, 1-0 AAC) on Sunday depending on the opening round results. If the Toreros win both matches, they will qualify for the 2024 ITA Men's National Indoor Championships.

LAST TIME OUT
  • San Diego led their match with LMU 3-0, before rain ultimately postponed the remainder of their contest.
  • The Toreros took the doubles points, before Stian Klaassen and Neo Niedner took home a pair of straight set victories.

OPPONENT HISTORY
  • San Diego is 9-7 all-time against Texas Tech, but the Red Raiders took the last matchup on Mar. 12, 2021 in Lubbock, Texas.
  • Should the Toreros win, it could set up a rematch with No. 7 USC, who eliminated the Toreros in last season's NCAA Tournament.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • The Toreros enter the spring schedule following a terrific fall, in which Iiro Vasa and Sacchitt Sharrma competed at ITA Fall Nationals and Oliver Tarvet shined.
  • San Diego is led by reigning WCC Coach of the Year Ryan Keckley, who returns nearly his entire lineup from last season's regular season WCC title.
  • Tarvet leads the way for the Toreros in the national rankings, checking in at a career-high No. 8 in the nation in singles according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
  • Vasa ranks No. 31 in the nation in singles, while Klaassen and Sharrma check in at No. 15 in the country in doubles.
  • Joining the Toreros this season is graduate student Savriyan Danilov, who hails from Moscow, Russia.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Tarvet leads the way with an 11-2 record in singles, including a 5-2 mark against ranked opponents.
  • To date, San Diego doubles teams are a combined 3-0 against ranked opponents.
