Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s Tennis Rolls Past Texas Tech at ITA Kickoff Weekend

LOS ANGELES – The San Diego men's tennis program (1-0, 0-0 WCC) officially opened their 2024 spring schedule with an opening round win at the ITA Kickoff Weekend, defeating Texas Tech (2-2, 0-0 Big 12) 4-1, on Saturday afternoon at Marks Stadium, on the campus of USC.

With the win, the Toreros have advanced to face No. 7 USC tomorrow afternoon in the championship match.

"Great team win today against a good Red Raiders squad," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We are working out some nerves as the season gets underway, but all-in-all I am really happy with how the boys performed. We put oursevles in a really good position after the first set of singles play, but lacked conviction and urgency to get across the finish line the way we know how. Each match we play is an opportunity to get better though, and sharpen who we want to be. We have another great opportunity in front of us tomorrow as we take on a familiar faced USC."

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego was able to put the pressure on Texas Tech early in the match, as Savriyan Danilov and Lambert Ruland cruised to a doubles win.
  • With both remaining matches knotted at 4-4, it would be Stian Klaassen and Sacchitt Sharrma who emerged, securing a late break point to give the Toreros a 1-0 lead.
  • Much like the start of the postponed LMU match, the Toreros depth shined, as Sharrma and Neo Niedner got out to fast starts at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
  • Niedner became the second Torero to 10 singles wins this season with the victory.
  • While Texas Tech tied the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 2, Niedner and Sharrma won in quick succession to take a 3-1 lead.
  • The Red Raiders were able to respond in the second set of their matches at No. 3 and No. 4, but Oliver Tarvet forced a third set to give the Toreros multiple victory scenarios.
  • In the end, Ruland rolled to a 6-2 win in the third set and secured the victory for San Diego.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros will play for a spot in the 2024 ITA Men's Indoor National Championships, facing No. 7 USC on Sunday at 2 p.m.
