GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The No. 20 San Diego women's tennis program (2-2, 0-0 WCC) were able to force No. 8 Florida (3-0, 0-0 SEC) into a decisive final match, but could not hang on, falling 4-3 to the Gators on Sunday afternoon at the Alfred A. Ring Tennis Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two sides opened doubles with a pair of quick wins, as Kailey Evans and Kristina Nordikyan cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 3 for the Toreros.
- That forced Elizabeth Goldsmith and Mia Mack into a decisive final match, with Florida emerging from the tiebreaker with the doubles point.
- Goldsmith was able to secure the first point of the match for the Toreros after her opponent retired down 5-2 in the opening set.
- From there, Evans continued her big day by breezing through her match at No. 6 singles, winning a comfortable 7-5, 6-2 decision to give San Diego a 2-1 lead.
- After Florida tied the match, Jordyn McBride took the momentum from her dominant tiebreaker in the opening set to cruise to a 6-1 second set win and give San Diego a 3-2 advantage.
- Despite a strong rally from Mack to force a second set tiebreaker, the Gators won the match which put all eyes on court one.
- Claudia De Las Heras earned a first set win in a tiebreaker, but the Gators did not quit.
- De Las Heras went up a break in the second set on two occasions, but her opponent was able to rally to win a 7-5 tiebreaker that ultimately propelled her to a third set victory and sealing the match for the Gators.
NEXT UP
- The Toreros will return home to face No. 18 USC on Friday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
