SAN DIEGO – Behind a clutch, three-set win from
Claudia De Las Heras, the No. 20 San Diego women's tennis program (3-2, 0-0 WCC) held on to earn another ranked win, defeating No. 16 USC (4-1, 0-0 PAC-12), 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- USC started quickly in doubles, forcing the Toreros into a response.
- De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride were the first to react, jumping in front 4-2 and not looking back to secure a win.
- From there, the reigning WCC Doubles Team of the Week of Kailey Evans and Kristina Nordikyan rallied from a break point down to force a tiebreaker, where the duo breezed to a 7-1 result.
- San Diego got an early boost in singles from Elizabeth Goldsmith, who jumped out to a quick 6-0 first set win.
- While De Las Heras and Mia Mack were locked in tight opening sets, the Trojans were able to gain ground on courts 5 through 7.
- Goldsmith would wrap up her match comfortably, but the Trojans took home the first set in all three of the matches from No. 4-6 singles.
- Ultimately, that allowed the Trojans to jump ahead 3-2 with the top-two matches remaining.
- Mack was the next to finish, as the sophomore earned a late break in the second set to set up De Las Heras for a clinching scenario.
- However, USC's Snow Han was able to pull ahead late in the second set to force a third.
- The third set remained on serve for the first 11 games, as De Las Heras and Han held their serve effectively.
- However, De Las Heras jumped on Han's serve in the biggest moment, breaking her to seal the match and give San Diego their second top-20 win of the season.
NEXT UP
- The Toreros are back in action tomorrow, hosting No. 24 Arizona State on Sunday at 2 p.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
