CARY, N.C. – Kailey Evans' four-win run from qualifiers came to an end in the ITA All-American Championships round of 16 on Friday, Sept. 27, just shy of an automatic to the NCAA Individual Championships.
 
The senior's spectacular performance began with a dominant straight-set win over ITA top-100 player Avelina Sayfetdinova of Texas Tech, 6-3, 6-1. The following day the 89^th-ranked player battled to a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) upset over No. 74 Elaine Chervinsky of Virginia to earn entry into the tournament's main draw.
 
In the main draw's round of 64 Evans topped national No. 60 Reece Carter of Washington handily, 6-3, 6-2. She posted the same score Thursday against ITA No. 31 Oyinlomo Quadre of FIU to advance to the Sweet 16.
 
The battle for a spot in the quarterfinal with Auburn's 32^nd-ranked DJ Bennett was Evans' first match of the tournament to go the distance. The Ennis, Texas native claimed the first set but fell to Bennett in a narrow third set, 6-3, 2-6, 5-7.

Advancing to the quarterfinal would have punched Evans' ticket to be one of 64 players headed to the NCAA Individual Championships for singles, taking place Nov. 18-23 in Waco, Texas. This is the first year that the NCAA Individual Championships for singles are being held in the fall as opposed to the spring. 
 
Next up for the Toreros is the San Diego Veterans Tennis Classic on home soil at the Hogan Tennis Center from Friday-Sunday, Oct. 4-6. The tournament is in the classic college dual match format and invites top teams from around the country to honor America's veterans and service members.
