Ramirez Leads No. 4 Toreros to Second Consecutive Road Victory

Sophomore scores go-ahead goal as San Diego takes down Pacific 1-0

STOCKTON, Calif. — Another clean sheet from goalkeeper Donovan Parisian and the USD back line set the scene for sophomore forward Steven Ramirez to come off the bench and score his second goal in two games, giving No. 4 San Diego men's soccer (12-1-2, 6-0-0 WCC) a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Pacific (2-8-4, 0-5-1 WCC) to remain undefeated in conference and extend its win streak to six in a row.

The Toreros registered multiple scoring chances in both the first half and the early part of the second half, but could not find the back of the net before Ramirez came off the bench and scored an impressive header off a cross from Luca Fava to give USD the go-ahead goal in the 69th minute.

Parisian and the San Diego back-line continued their stretch of dominance by limiting the Tigers to just one total shot in the game, allowing the Torero attackers to get the chance they needed to secure the win late in the second half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saturday evenings contest started off slow as neither team could register a shot on goal through the first 17 minutes of play
  • Cesar Bahena registered the scoring chance for the Toreros in the 19th minute with an open shot inside the six-yard box, but a save from the Tiger goalkeeper kept it scoreless.
  • USD had multiple scoring opportunities in the first half, but ultimately could not find the back of the net, ending the first period of play with a score of 0-0.
  • Ramirez finally broke the deadlock in the 69th minute with a beautiful header that drifted over the Tiger goalkeeper's head and snuck into the far post on a quality ball in from Fava, giving the Toreros the goal they had been searching for.
  • A shot from Samy Kanaan in the 80th minute nearly made it 2-0 for San Diego, but a save from the Tigers maintained the 1-0 advantage for the Toreros. USD would not relinquish that lead through the remainder of the half, making the final score 1-0.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Ramirez has now come off the bench and scored the lone goal in back-to-back 1-0 victories for USD.
  • His 70th minute goal was his fourth goal of the season, putting him third in total goals among his teammates behind Kanaan (8) and Bahena (7).
  • The Torero back line combined with Parisian have now earned their third consecutive clean sheet.
  • Fava's assist was his sixth of the season, keeping him in the lead for total assists this season.
  • Ethan Warne recorded his third assist of the season.
  • Six wins in a row is the longest win streak for the Toreros since 2019 when it opened up its season with six consecutive wins.
