Toreros Fall in Overtime at UC Santa Barbara

Horstmeyer drops 17 points, Ranson adds 12-more in hard-fought defeat to Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The San Diego women's basketball team went on a 12-2 run in the third quarter to get back in the game and force overtime. 

However, the Gauchos scored the first six points in overtime, leading to taking down the Toreros, 71-63 in the extra period. 

USD (2-2) was led by Horstmeyer, who scored a team-high 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting.  

In addition, the Toreros outrebounded the Gauchos (4-2) 43-37 and 17-10 on the offensive glass. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • Sophomore guard Lauren McCall opened the scoring for USD on a jumper in the paint with 7:34 left in the opening period. 
  • The Toreros went into the first media timeout making back-to-back buckets from Ava Ransom, despite trailing 11-7 to the Gauchos with 4:31 left in the opening period. 
  • San Diego was then held scoreless for the next four minutes until Claire Gallagher made a layup with 9.0 seconds left to go into the second quarter, trailing 18-9. 
  • Hallie Rhodes was able to make a layup to keep within reach at 25-17 heading into the second quarter media timeout inside of five minutes. 
  • McCall made a 3-pointer on a second chance opportunity from an offensive rebound by freshman Dresha Moore to cut Santa Barbara's lead to six, 32-26 heading into halftime. 
  • Ransom and McCall led the team with five points through the first 20 minutes as senior Truitt Reilly had a team-high five rebounds.
  • After having a deficit by as much as 14, USD shortened the deficit to 1, 36-35, after Kylie Horsrmeyer made 2-of-3 at the charity stripe with six minutes remaining in the period.
  • USD took its first lead of the game, 39-38, on a layup from Horstmeyer with 4:16 left in the third quarter. 
  • The Toreros got another offensive rebound near the end of the quarter to go into the final 10 minutes all square at 45. 
  • With 4:08 remaining in the game, USD and UCSB were tied at 51. 
  • With 1:09 left, Horstmeyer made a turn-around jumper in the paint to re-tie the game 55 apiece. 
  • USD Head coach Cindy Fisher called timeout with 4.4 seconds left, needing a bucket after Gauchos got a jumper in the lane to take the lead. 
  • Out of the timeout, Ransom scored a layup on a designed, sideline out of bounds play, to tie the game once again at 57 with 2.0 seconds left.
  • UCSB put up a shot but missed, resulting in USD's first overtime game of the season. 
  • The Gauchos scored the first six points in overtime before the Toreros could get on the board. 
TORERO TIDBITS 
  • Truitt Reilly had 12 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double in the Toreros uniform. 
  • Horstmeyer's 17 points was her first double-digit scoring performance of the season. 
  • USD went 55% (11-of-20) from the free throw line.
  • This was the Toreros' first overtime game since Feb. 18, 2023 when USD won at Santa Clara 69-62 in West Coast Conference action. 
UP NEXT
The Toreros end their 3-game road trip and return home to the Jenny Craig Pavilion this weekend for the Thanksgiving Classic. USD faces Nebraska Omaha Friday at 2 p.m. and Alabama A&M Saturday at 4 p.m. 

In addition, Alabama A&M will face Utah Valley Friday at 4 p.m. and Utah Valley takes on Nebraska Omaha Saturday at 4 p.m. as part of the Thanksgiving Classic in the JCP.
