Late Rally Falls Just Short for Softball Against LIU

SAN DIEGO – In a wild back-and-forth game that ended with a play at the plate, the San Diego softball program (0-7, 0-0 WCC) dropped a heartbreaking, 8-7 loss to Long Island (3-3, 0-0 NEC) on Thursday night at the USD Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a game of tremendous momentum swings, it was Long Island who started quickly, scoring three runs in the first inning.
  • The Toreros were able to get multiple runners on base in the first two innings, but managed to finally break through in the third.
  • Carly Ruiz led off the inning with a single and Mikalyn Emanuelli added her own single to set up Joecellia Roberts.
  • The junior just nearly missed a three-run home run, but blasted a two-run triple off the wall to cut the LIU lead to 3-2.
  • From there, Michelle Delgado reached on a hit-by-pitch and stole second base, before Shawnese Hogue-Lacy reached on an error to tie the game at 3-3.
  • Tele Jennings stepped to the plate and gave San Diego a lead, crushing a two-run double to the wall in left center field for a 5-3 advantage.
  • San Diego nearly struck for more, but stranded the bases loaded.
  • LIU was able to get a run back in the fourth inning off a sacrifice fly but took the lead back in the fifth inning with three more runs to lead 7-5.
  • The Sharks added a run in the seventh inning that proved to be critical, but the Toreros would not go away.
  • Emma Giaime started a rally with a hit-by-pitch and Jennings kept it alive with a single to set up EJ Joyner.
  • Joyner laced the first pitch she saw for a two-run double to set up Amanda Limon down just 8-7.
  • Limon delivered with a single up the middle, but Lauren Asia was thrown out at home to end the game in favor of the Sharks.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Jennings tallied the first three-hit game by a Torero freshman since Roberts did it on Feb. 11, 2022 at Ole Miss.
  • In addition, Jennings tallied two doubles and became the first Torero freshman to do so since Roberts on Mar. 9, 2022 against UC Riverside.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros will continue the Torero Classic on Saturday, hosting Southern Utah and Eastern Illinois at 4:30 p.m., and 7 p.m., respectively.
