AUSTIN, Texas — A strong collective effort on the mound and a clutch late-game homer from
Ryan Ward led San Diego baseball (1-1, 0-0 WCC) to a thrilling 6-5 win over No. 16 Texas (1-1, 0-0 Big 12), evening its series with the Longhorns in 11 innings at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
True freshman
Logan Reddemann started on the mound for the Toreros and shined in his college debut, firing five strong innings while allowing three earned runs on four hits and striking out four.
Calvin Schapira provided three scoreless innings out of the bullpen before Ward broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 10th by hammering a go-ahead two-run homer. After the Longhorns answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame, San Diego scored a run on a double steal to take a 6-5 lead it would not relinquish.
San Diego's victory over No. 16 Texas on Saturday marked its third win over a ranked opponent in its last three seasons (March 10, 2023 at No. 16 TCU and May 21, 2022 vs. No. 11 Gonzaga).
EARLY LEAD, LATE LIFE
- Angelo Peraza got the scoring started in the top of the first with an RBI groundout, plating Dustin Allen to give the Toreros an early 1-0 advantage.
- Texas pulled ahead in the bottom of the the third on a three-run homer, but Peraza provided an answer in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-2.
- Jack Costello tied the score at 3-3 in the top of the seventh with an RBI groundout and the score remained deadlocked until the top of the 10th, when Ward turned on an inside fastball and sent it over UFCU Disch-Falk Field's right fiield wall to make it 5-3 in the Toreros' favor.
- An RBI single and a sacrifice fly from UT in the bottom of the 10th knotted the score once again, but a double steal by Costello (stealing second) and Allen (stealing home) put San Diego up for good, 6-5.
A TEAM EFFORT ON THE MOUND
- Austin Smith entered in relief of Reddemann and received the win after allowing a pair of runs on four hits, walking two, and striking out two.
- Schapira followed with a trio of run-free frames before passing the baton to Vaughn Mauterer, who earned the Toreros' first save of the season by spinning a scoreless 11th.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Allen had a game-high five hits and four runs scored.
- Peraza and Ward each added a team-high two RBIs.
- Smith earned the win after playing five innings in left field and completing a highlight-reel sliding catch. At the plate, he added a hit, a run scored, and a walk.
- Catcher Ariel Armas threw out two Texas runners trying to steal.
- USD out-hit UT 12-10.
