AUSTIN, Texas — San Diego baseball (1-2, 0-0 WCC) on Sunday afternoon took an early lead for the third consecutive game but could not hang on to secure a series win over No. 16 Texas, dropping a tough 9-4 decision to the Longhorns (2-1, 0-0 Big 12) at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
PATIENCE, SMALLBALL PUTS TOREROS UP EARLY
- Back-to-back bases-loaded walks drawn by Will Worthington and Ryan Ward gave USD a 2-0 advantage in the top of the second.
- UT got a run back in the bottom of the third on a double steal, then tied the game at 2-2 an inning later with a sacrifice fly.
- Jack Costello pushed USD back in front in the top of the fifth by reaching on a fielding error that plated Justin DeCriscio from third, but the Longhorns immediately answered in the bottom of the frame, taking a 5-3 lead via a bases-loaded hit by pitch, a bases-loaded walk, and an RBI single.
- Will Worthington ripped an opposite-field RBI single in the eighth before the Toreros loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth, but Texas scored four more times across the game's final four innings to create a 9-4 advantage that San Diego could not overcome.
ON THE MOUND
- Ryan Kysar turned in a solid effort in his first start of 2024, holding the Longhorns to two runs on two hits while striking out five across four innings of work.
- Conner Thurman entered with one out in the sixth and worked his way out of a bases-loaded jam with a strikeout.
- JD Goodcase (0.2 IP) and Dallin Harrison (0.1 IP) teamed up to throw a scoreless eighth in what marked Harrison's college debut.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Gurevitch paced the Torero offense with two hits, two runs scored, and two walks.
- Worthington was 1-for-3 with a team-high two RBIs and a walk.
- DeCriscio was 2-for-5 with a run scored.
- Ward drew two walks and drove in a run.
- Angelo Peraza walked and scored a run.
- Colton Sundloff made his Torero debut out of the bullpen on Sunday, and Jonathan Fitz made his college debut as a pinch hitter.
