Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. – With rain beginning to bear down, the No. 18 San Diego men's tennis program (6-1, 1-0 WCC) put a bow on a 4-1 win over California (3-4, 0-0 PAC-12) on Sunday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second straight match, the Toreros were locked in tight doubles matches, but were able to secure the point.
- California took the opening match, but the Toreros rallied, as Savriyan Danilov and Lambert Ruland secured a win, that was quickly followed by Oliver Tarvet and Iiro Vasa earning a win to give San Diego a 1-0 advantage.
- Singles got off to a hot start, as the Toreros took five of the six opening sets.
- Sacchitt Sharrma was able to secure the first match in a 6-3, 6-1 decision, but rain rolled in to force the match into a delay, with San Diego up 2-0.
- Both teams were able to resume play shortly thereafter and the Golden Bears earned the first match out of the delay and cut the deficit to 2-1.
- With more rain rolling in, the Toreros increased the lead to 3-1 on a Stian Klaassen win.
- The rain began to increase and with just minutes remaining before courts would become unplayable, the Toreros had two match points at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
- In the end, Ruland was able to secure the win that sealed the match before the rain closed in, while Vasa led 6-5 in his tiebreaker.
NEXT UP
- The Toreros are back home next weekend, hosting Cal Poly on Feb. 23 at 12 p.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
