Horton’s Big Day Propels Women’s Basketball Past LMU

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego women's basketball program (7-18, 3-9 WCC) got a standout showing from Dylan Horton to propel them past LMU (9-15, 4-8 WCC) on Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

Horton led the team with 18 points and three assists, while Veronica Sheffey added 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Much like Thursday's win in Malibu, the Toreros came out of the gate with energy and opened on a 9-2 run.
  • Kylie Horstmeyer tallied five of those first nine points, but LMU would not go away quietly.
  • LMU answered with a 12-0 run to take a 14-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Harsimran Kaur started to heat up to bring San Diego back in the game, recording five points in the first six minutes of the second quarter.
  • Five consecutive points by Sheffey helped the Toreros take a 24-21 lead into the break.
  • San Diego kept their strong run of play going, extending the lead to 40-27 quickly, as Horton began to heat up.
  • One of four Horton three-pointers and a basket by Kaur gave San Diego a 45-33 advantage that the Toreros would not give it up.
  • The lead would balloon to as high as 20 midway through the fourth quarter, before settling at a 66-50 win for the home side.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • With six assists on the day, Sheffey (129) moved into the single season top-10 in assists, matching Polly Dong (2003-04) and Lori Morris (1983-84) for the seventh-best total in program history. Next up is Jane Gilpin (130) in sixth.
  • The Toreros have limited back-to-back opponents to under 10 assists.
