NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 12 San Diego women's tennis program (5-3, 0-0 WCC) nearly rallied from an early deficit, but ultimately fell, 4-3 at No. 51 Oklahoma (4-3, 0-0 Big 12) on Friday at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oklahoma opened the match quickly in doubles, getting out to huge leads in two of the three matches.
- The Sooners went up 5-0 and 5-1 respectively in those matches, and while the Toreros turned the corner in one to make it 5-4, it was too late, as Oklahoma struck for the doubles point.
- Singles was a mixed bag for the Toreros, as Elizabeth Goldsmith raced out to an early 6-0 first set win, while the Sooners gained the upper hand in a pair of matches.
- Oklahoma would take the first two matches, but Goldsmith secured the win quickly thereafter to make it 3-1.
- However, the tide began to turn, as Jordyn McBride won her opening set and Mia Mack and Abigail Desiatnikov rallied from their first set deficits to force a third set each.
- McBride gritted out a tough tiebreaker to earn San Diego's second point, leaving it up to the third sets on courts two and five.
- Desiatnikov would jump out ahead and hang on, to tie the match at 2-2, but Mack's No. 93 ranked opponent was able to rally to earn a break point and close out her match to give Oklahoma the win.
NEXT UP
- The Toreros will continue their road trip on Sunday, facing Rice at 9 a.m., in Houston, Texas.
