SAN DIEGO — San Diego baseball (4-3, 0-0 WCC) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning to pull within a run on Sunday afternoon but could not complete a last-chance comeback to secure a sweep over Arizona, suffering a tough 10-9 loss after the Wildcats (4-3, 0-0 Pac-12) plated five through the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings with a pair of well-timed home runs.
USD opened up with an early advantage via back-to-back first-inning home runs from Jack Costello and Austin Smith, but after adding a run in the third did not score again until the game's final frame, when it plated a pair before bringing the tying run to third and the winning run to second base.
Angelo Peraza, Jack Costello, and Will Worthington all were 3-for-5 from the plate in the series finale, combining for six RBIs and four runs scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- San Diego wasted little time in Sunday afternoon's matchup, getting the first inning started with a pair of singles from Angelo Peraza and Jack Gurevitch to put runners on the corners.
- Costello followed by belting a booming homerun over Fowler Park's left field fence, clearing the bases to score Peraza, and Gurevitch and give the Toreros an early 3-0 lead to start the game.
- Smith stayed hot Sunday afternoon by stepping up to the plate and launching another ball over the right field fence — this time from the DH spot — to add a fourth run in the bottom of the first for San Diego.
- USD's huge first inning was not finished after the solo shot from Smith, as two singles from Jakob Christian and Ryan Ward made way for Will Worthington to rope a two-RBI single up the middle to score them both, pushing USD's advantage to 6-0.
- Arizona added a pair of runs in the top of the third on an RBI single up the middle and a sacrifice fly into right field, cutting the San Diego lead to 6-2.
- Dustin Allen added a run for USD in the bottom of the third when he reached on an RBI fielder's choice to second base, scoring Worthington to make it 7-2.
- The Wildcats responded in the top of the fourth by recording a two-run homer and an RBI single, pulling within two at 7-5.
- Arizona struck again in the top of the sixth with a game-tying two-run homer, then a seventh-inning solo shot gave the Wildcats an 8-7 lead.
- A sacrifice fly and an RBI single for Arizona tacked on two more runs (both unearned) in the top of the eighth, making it 10-7 in the visitors' favor.
- San Diego plated two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a sacrifice fly from Gabe D'Arcy and an RBI single from Worthington to make it a one-run game at 10-9, but fell short of its second walk-off victory of 2024 despite loading the bases with two outs.
ON THE MOUND
- Righty Ryan Kysar started Sunday's game on the mound for USD and surrendered five runs on seven hits across four innings while striking out five.
- Alex Schrier was first out of the bullpen for the Toreros and pitched three innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
- JD Goodcase entered out of the bullpen in the eighth and turned in 1.2 scoreless, one-hit frames to end the game for the Toreros.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Smith's solo-shot in the bottom of the first marked his third home run in the Toreros' last two games, giving him three longballs in his last seven at-bats.
- Christian registered his first start for San Diego on Sunday afternoon in right field and recorded his first hit as a Torero (also his first at the Division I level) alongside a highlight-reel sliding catch on the warning track.
- The ball flew at Fowler Park on Sunday afternoon, with both teams combining for five home runs.
- After taking two of three from Arizona this weekend, San Diego has now opened its home schedule with a series win over a Power-Five opponent in each of the last three seasons (three of four from Oregon in 2022, three of four from Nebraska in 2023).
