Early Lead Slips Away in Midweek Matchup With Matadors

Toreros strike first on second-inning homer from Ariel Armas but can't hang on in loss at CSUN

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Ariel Armas clubbed his first home run of 2024 as San Diego baseball (4-4, 0-0 WCC) jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but a five-run seventh inning from CSUN (6-2, 0-0 Big West) dealt the Toreros a 7-4 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Austin Smith walked to begin the top of the second and Will Worthington legged out an infield single, Armas turned on a high fastball and sent it to deep right field for his first homer of the season, plating both Smith and Worthington to make it 3-0 in the Toreros' favor.
  • Smith added on in the following frame with an RBI sacrifice fly that scored Angelo Peraza from third to extend USD's advantage to 4-0.
  • The Matadors answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth to make it 4-1, then scored six times across the seventh and eighth innings on two RBI singles and a pair of homers to create a 7-4 lead that the Toreros could not overcome.
ON THE MOUND
  • Conner Thurman started Tuesday's game at CSUN and turned in two perfect frames while striking out one in what marked his first start since May 29, 2021.
  • Dallin Harrison was first out of the bullpen against the Matadors and allowed a run on a hit and a walk across 1.1 innings while striking out one.
  • Ivran Romero entered for Harrison with one out in the bottom of the fourth and struck out a game-high five across a team-high 3.1 frames but ultimately surrendered four earned runs on five hits and a walk.
  • Calvin Schapira threw the game's final 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits (both solo homers) while striking out two.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Peraza and Jack Gurevitch each tied the game high with two hits apiece.
  • Armas recorded a game-high three RBIs and drew a game-high two walks.
  • Peraza, Smith, Worthington, and Armas all scored a run, and Dustin Allen, Jakob Christian, and Smith all worked a single walk.
  • The two solo home runs Schapira surrendered were the only hits he allowed.
  • Torero pitchers teamed up to walk a season-low two batters on Tuesday.
