SAN DIEGO – The No. 13 San Diego men's tennis program (9-1, 1-0 WCC) won their eighth consecutive match and improved to 6-0 at home, defeating No. 33 Stanford (6-4, 1-0 PAC-12), 4-0, on Thursday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Utilizing the newly constructed doubles lineup from the win over Oregon, the Toreros started brilliantly for the second straight match.
- It would be the same two pairings from the win over Oregon, as Stian Klaassen and Oliver Tarvet jumped out to an early break and Savriyan Danilov and Lambert Ruland followed suit, each winning a 6-2 decision.
- The momentum carried into singles, as the team once again took all six opening sets, including three matches for unranked Toreros against ranked Cardinal opponents.
- Iiro Vasa got off to a very convincing start with a 6-2 opening set win and would battle through the second set to earn a late break and take the match.
- Klaassen appeared to be next almost immediately, as he built a 5-1 second set lead, but his opponent rallied to even the match at 5-5.
- Nevertheless, Klaassen remained composed and won his second set tiebreaker to make it a 3-0 Torero lead.
- The match neared a conclusion across a number of exceptionally tight sets.
- Tarvet and Danilov found themselves in second set tiebreakers, while Sacchitt Sharrma led 6-5 and Ruland rallied from losing his second set to make it 5-5 in the third.
- In the end, Tarvet got the clinching point first, winning his 20th match and eighth ranked win of the season to secure a San Diego win.
