Women’s Tennis Rolls Through Singles in Win Over No. 24 Arizona State

SAN DIEGO – The No. 20 San Diego women's tennis program (4-2, 0-0 WCC) used a terrific showing in singles to power past No. 24 Arizona State (4-2, 0-0 PAC-12), 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego found themselves in an early hole at the beginning of their second match in two days, as Arizona State quickly struck for the doubles point.
  • However, the tide began to turn as the Toreros took the court for singles.
  • Kailey Evans jumped out to a big lead in her match with a 6-2 first set win, while Elizabeth Goldsmith followed with a first set win of her own.
  • Filippa Bruu-Syversen and Claudia De Las Heras gritted out their first sets as well to put the Toreros on the right path to victory.
  • Arizona State began to rally in a pair of matches, as they cut an Evans 4-1 lead in the second set to 4-4 and took a 3-0 lead on Goldsmith in the second.
  • However, Goldsmith would not be phased and answered with five straight games, while Evans earned a key service hold to stop the momentum.
  • Evans would clinch the first match, while Goldsmith followed with a 6-4 second set win of her own to give San Diego a 2-1 lead.
  • Meanwhile, De Las Heras made further progress on a second consecutive ranked win and built a 5-2 lead in the second set.
  • However, her opponent managed to get one break point back to put the pressure on her serve.
  • De Las Heras would not be denied and struck for the win to extend the lead to 3-1.
  • Needing one more point, Mia Mack started to rally from a first set loss and Bruu-Syversen continued to hold an advantage in her match.
  • In the end, it would be Bruu-Syversen, who finished off a straight set victory to give San Diego the match.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros will have a lengthy break, but return to action on Feb. 16, when they host Hawaii at 2 p.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
