Sharrma Clinches Second Consecutive Ranked Win for Men’s Tennis

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego men's tennis program (3-1, 0-0 WCC) secured their second consecutive ranked victory, defeating No. 18 Arizona State (5-2, 0-0 PAC-12), 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the Hogan Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On a bright Sunday morning, the Toreros took the court looking for another big win, but got off to a sluggish start in doubles.
  • Despite an early service break from Oliver Tarvet and Iiro Vasa, the Sun Devils were able to get off to a strong start on courts one and three and ultimately took the doubles point.
  • However, the Toreros gathered themselves quickly and rose to the occasion in singles.
  • While Arizona State earned a quick lead on court three, the sturdy trio at No. 4-6 singles built huge leads from the start.
  • Stian Klaassen kept his strong spring going by cruising through his opening set at 6-1.
  • Savriyan Danilov was close behind, while Oliver Tarvet broke the early stalemate against his top-10 opponent on court one to record back-to-back break points and take his first set.
  • Danilov breezed through his second set and Klaassen stifled a rally from his opponent to make it 2-2 entering the final three matches.
  • Tarvet maintained his advantage, while Arizona State struck for another point on court two to set up a finale on court five.
  • Having already won the first set 6-4, Sacchitt Sharrma and his opponent were locked in a 2-2 battle early in set number two.
  • Sharrma delivered a big backhand return that clipped the top of the net and fell home out of the reach of his opponent to secure a break point.
  • The redshirt senior maintained his break point advantage throughout the rest of the set, despite facing a late push at 5-4.
  • On a deuce point to decide the match, Sharrma delivered an emphatic ace to secure the victory.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros return to action on Saturday, hosting Washington on Feb. 10 at 12 p.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
