Toreros Drop Close Contest at No. 20 UC Irvine

San Diego baseball falls 3-1 to UCI at Anteater park on Friday night

IRVINE, Calif. — San Diego baseball (4-5, 0-0 WCC) struck first for an early 1-0 lead but couldn't hang on against undefeated No. 20 UC Irvine (7-0, 0-0 Big West) on Friday night, falling to the Anteaters by a 3-1 margin at Anteater Ballpark as part of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic.

USD opened up an early advantage in the top of the first via an RBI sacrifice fly from Austin Smith, but did not score again on Friday night after being held to only five hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • San Diego wasted little time in Friday evening's matchup, getting the top of the first inning started with a walk from Angelo Peraza and a single from Jack Gurevitch to put runners on the corners.
  • Smith followed by delivering a sacrifice fly into left center to score Peraza from third, giving the Toreros an early 1-0 lead.
  • The Anteaters responded in the bottom of the frame with a one-out RBI-double to left center, scoring a run to tie the game up at one run apiece after an inning of play.
  • The Anteaters plated a run in both the sixth and seventh innings on an RBI-fielder's choice, and an RBI-double down the right field line to give them a 3-1 advantage they did not relinquish.
ON THE MOUND
  • Righty Josh Randall got the Friday night start on the mound for the Toreros against the Anteaters and tossed six innings while surrendering two runs on six hits and striking out four.
  • Smith took the mound from left field in the seventh and pitched the game's final two frames in relief of Randall while allowing a run on three hits, walking three, and striking out two.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Gabe D'Arcy was 2-for-4 on Friday with a pair of singles.
  • Peraza, Gurevitch, and Smith each drew a walk.
  • Friday evening's matchup at UC Irvine marked the second contest of an eight-game road stretch for the Toreros.
  • After striking first in tonight's matchup at UC Irvine, San Diego has scored first in seven of its first nine games to begin the 2024 season.
