Late Rally Falls Short for No. 15 Women’s Tennis Against No. 12 California

SAN DIEGO – The No. 15 San Diego women's tennis program (9-4, 0-0 WCC) nearly erased an early deficit, but ultimately fell, 4-3 to No. 12 California (8-2, 2-0 PAC-12) on Saturday morning at the Hogan Tennis Center.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a rematch of last season's opening round of the NCAA Tournament, the visiting Golden Bears came out of the gate with energy.
  • Despite that, Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride rallied from an early break to storm back in their match and ultimately win a 6-4 decision.
  • However, California earned a break and hold in the final two games of the match at No. 1 doubles and took a 1-0 lead.
  • Facing an uphill battle in singles against a California lineup made up of six ranked players, the Toreros attempted to chip away.
  • Kailey Evans shined and earned a big win at No. 6 singles, earning a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her No. 109 ranked opponent.
  • However, the Golden Bears won matchups at No. 4 and No. 5 singles to put California on the brink.
  • Mia Mack would help cut the lead down to 3-2 with a thrilling win over No. 35 Jessica Alsola.
  • Both remaining matches would go the distance, but California secured the fourth point in three sets.
  • De Las Heras would end the day with a big win, emerging with a victory after dropping the opening set in a tiebreaker, to win both a second set tiebreaker and a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of the third set and defeat No. 23 Hannah Viller Moeller.

  • The Toreros will open West Coast Conference play next weekend, hosting San Francisco on Sunday, Mar. 24 at 2 p.m., at the Hogan Tennis Center.
