ANN ARBOR, Mich. — San Diego baseball (10-8, 0-0 WCC) on Sunday afternoon took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth but could not hang on to secure a sweep of Michigan (7-13, 0-0 Big 10), falling by a 3-2 margin in the series finale at Ray Fisher Stadium after the Wolverines plated two runs in a last-chance rally.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Austin Smith — who was also USD's starting pitcher on Sunday — kicked off the scoring in the top of the second by sending a towering, opposite-field solo shot over the left-field wall to give his team an early lead.
- He kept Michigan off the board until the bottom of the fourth, when it tied the score at 1-1 with an RBI double.
- Will Worthington put USD back in front in the top of the sixth by recording an RBI fielder's choice, beating out a would-be 4-6-3 double-play ball with the bases loaded to score Jakob Christian from third. Worthington was initially called out at first base, but after an official replay review was determined to be safe, giving the Toreros a 2-1 advantage.
- San Diego led by that same margin until the bottom of the ninth, when the Wolverines scored the game's tying and winning runs on a one-out two-run homer.
ON THE MOUND
- Smith got the start for San Diego and turned in 4.1 strong innings, scattering four hits while allowing one run, walking none, and striking out four.
- Drake Frize was first out of the bullpen in relief of Smith and struck out four batters of his own across 1.2 perfect innings of work.
- Alex Schrier got three groundouts in a 1-2-3 eighth, then Mauterer set down the Wolverines in order in the eighth before the home team walked it off in the ninth.
TORERO TIDBITS
- Angelo Peraza, Jack Costello, and Smith paced the USD offense with two hits apiece.
- Smith and Christian scored the Toreros' two runs.
- Gurevitch drew two walks on Sunday, and Peraza, Christian, Dustin Allen, and Worthington each drew one free pass.
- Allen had San Diego's lone stolen base.
