Seventh Inning Runs Down Softball Against Rutgers

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (8-23, 0-0 WCC) sent the winning run to the plate in seventh inning, but were unable to complete the rally, falling 5-3 to Rutgers (18-11, 0-0 Big Ten) on Saturday evening at the USD Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED – RUTGERS 5, SAN DIEGO 3
  • While Rutgers was able to secure an early lead with a first inning sacrifice fly, the Toreros were able to quickly respond.
  • Michelle Delgado singled and promptly moved to second on a fielding error.
  • The Scarlet Knights then tallied their second error of the inning, while allowed Delgado to come all the way home and tie the game at 1-1.
  • McKenna Braegelmann helped keep the Rutgers offense in check, with a pair of scoreless innings in the second and third.
  • However, Rutgers struck for a run in the fourth inning on an RBI single and took a 2-1 advantage.
  • After a pair of scoreless frames, the Torero offense came alive in the sixth inning.
  • Tele Jennings led off the inning with her 10th double of the season, before Delgado bunted her over to third base.
  • Amanda Limon came through with yet another clutch RBI single to tie the game at 2-2.
  • Rutgers would put together a three-run seventh inning and forced the Toreros into a hold.
  • Nevertheless, the offense attempted to rally, as the Toreros got two runners on via a walk and fielding error.
  • Taylor Johnson was next to bat and stepped up with a massive RBI double down the left field line to make it 5-3 with just one out
  • However, the Scarlet Knights were able to get back-to-back strikeouts to strand the tying runs on base and secure the win.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Rose made her 115th appearance in the circle, taking sole possession of third on the Toreros all-time pitching appearances list. Next up is Jennifer Ellenbeck (117) in second.
  • Jennings reached the 10-double threshold, joining Johnson in that category. It's the first time the Toreros have had two players reach 10 or more doubles in a season since 2016, and the first time both players have been sophomores or younger for the program in the 21st century.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros will return to action next week, hosting Weber State for a three-game set that begins on Friday at 12 p.m., at the USD Softball Complex.
