SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (9-24, 0-0 WCC) earned a split of a doubleheader against Weber State (11-15, 0-0 Big Sky), falling 3-0 in game one, before rallying to win game two by a final score of 3-1 on Friday evening at the USD Softball Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED – WEBER STATE 3, SAN DIEGO 0
- Friday's opener was highlighted by terrific pitching from both Weber State's Brooke Merrill and Courtney Rose, who each tallied four scoreless frames to open the game.
- San Diego nearly struck for a run in the second inning, as Amanda Limon and Carly Ruiz each singled and advanced a base to set up Alyssa Hernandez.
- Hernandez lofted a ball to right field that was caught, but Limon was thrown out at home plate to keep the game level.
- Weber State finally broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single in the fifth inning to lead 1-0.
- That lead would expand to 3-0 in the sixth inning, but Kelsey Tadlock came in to pitch in relief and shut the door to keep San Diego in the game.
- The Toreros had one more chance in the seventh inning, as Joecellia Roberts singled, but the Wildcats were able to generate a double play and finish off the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 3, WEBER STATE 1
- Much like the opener, both offenses struggled to hit the opposing pitcher, as McKenna Braegelmann led the way in the circle for San Diego.
- Braegelmann opened with four hitless frames, while her offense was finally able to strike.
- Hernandez led off the third inning with a double and Limon tallied a single and stolen base to set up Taylor Johnson.
- The sophomore made no mistake and laced an RBI single up the middle to give the Toreros a 1-0 lead.
- Braegelmann's no-hit bid was lost in the fifth inning, as Lauren Asia nearly make a spectacular diving catch and Weber State was ultimately able to tie the game later in the frame.
- Nevertheless, Braegelmann persisted and notched a scoreless sixth inning, before her offense responded.
- Limon led off the frame with a single, to set up Roberts.
- Roberts laced an RBI double to score Limon all the way from first base and give San Diego a 2-1 lead.
- Michelle Delgado added some insurance with an RBI double of her own to increase the lead to 3-1, but was thrown out at home off a Ruiz single to end the inning.
- The lead was enough for Braegelmann, who sat down the Wildcats in order to finish off a complete game victory.
