Costello, Gurevitch Punctuate Power Surge in 13-5 Win Over Titans

San Diego scores nine times in sixth inning on Tuesday night to cruise past Cal State Fullerton at Fowler Park

SAN DIEGO — A nine-run sixth inning that featured a pair of massive home runs from Jack Gurevitch highlighted another offensive eruption for San Diego baseball (13-10, 1-2 WCC) on Tuesday night, leading it past Cal State Fullerton (8-15, 1-5 Big West) by a 13-5 margin at Fowler Park.

Gurevitch led off the game's pivotal sixth frame with a towering solo shot to right field that landed atop the Manchester Village Apartments. Eight batters later he sent an opposite-field two run shot to left, and by the end of the inning USD scored nearly 10 times on six hits and two Fullerton errors.

But even after the sophomore first baseman's stirring sixth-inning power display, it was Jack Costello who paced the Torero offense against the Titans, notching a game-high four RBIs by hammering a first-inning grand slam.

The offensive barrage complemented strong appearances out of the Torero bullpen from Alex Schrier, Dallin Harrison, Conner Thurman, and Chase Minor, who teamed up for five scoreless frames across the contest's middle innings.

EARLY AND OFTEN
  • Costello crushed the fourth pitch he saw in the bottom of the first for a grand slam, giving his team a 4-0 lead after Dustin Allen and Gurevitch walked and Justin DeCriscio singled.
  • CSUF answered with a pair of runs across the third and fourth innings to make it 4-2 before USD scored nine times in the bottom of the sixth via a solo homer (Gurevitch), an RBI fielder's choice (Will Worthington, who bunted), an RBI bases-loaded walk (Angelo Peraza), an RBI sacrifice fly (Dustin Allen), a Titan throwing error after a single from DeCriscio, another homer from Gurevitch, and an RBI single from Christian. San Diego held a commanding 13-5 advantage when the inning was over.
  • The Titans scored twice in the top of the ninth to make it 13-5 but got no closer.
ON THE MOUND
  • Ryan Kysar started Tuesday night's game for USD and turned in three innings while allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits and three walks alongside four strikeouts.
  • Alex Schrier was first out of the bullpen in relief of Kysar and threw two scoreless frames, working his way out of trouble in the fourth after Costello threw out a runner at home who was trying to tag up on a fly ball to left field.
  • Dallin Harrison got the first out of the sixth before passing the baton to Conner Thurman, who stranded a runner on first with a pair of strikeouts before also keeping CSUF off the board in the seventh.
  • Minor took over in the eighth and needed just 11 pitches to set the Titans down in order.
  • JD Goodcase worked around a hit and a walk to turn in a scoreless outing in the ninth that sealed the win for USD.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Gurevitch had three RBIs, scored three runs, and drew a walk on Tuesday night.
  • Costello scored three runs of his own to tie Gurevitch for the game high.

  • Peraza, Allen, Worthington, and Christian all drove in a run.
  • Allen drew a team-high two free passes, and was joined by four other teammates who worked a walk.
  • In total, seven different Toreros drove in a run against CSUF.
  • San Diego has scored 29 runs on 23 hits across its last two games.
  • Tuesday night's win earned USD a sweep in its season series against Cal State Fullerton.
  • Kysar's three innings pitched and four strikeouts on Tuesday were both game highs.
