Offense Explodes in Softball’s Five Inning Win at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The San Diego softball program (11-28, 0-0 WCC) exploded for a season-high 11 runs in an 11-3 win in five innings at New Mexico State (20-13, 6-3 CUSA) on Saturday afternoon at the NM State Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 11, NEW MEXICO STATE 3 (F/5)
  • The Torero offense struck early and often in the series finale and set the tone in the opening inning.
  • Taylor Johnson, Joecellia Roberts and Tele Jennings tallied back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases and set up Arisa Tovar.
  • Tovar was able to generate a run on a grounder that was thrown away to allow each runner to move up a base.
  • From there, Carly Ruiz delivered her own RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
  • While the Aggies got two runs back in the opening inning off a home run, Emma Giaime entered the circle and shut the door on any rally opportunities.
  • San Diego would retake the lead in the second inning, as Mikalyn Emanuelli singled and advanced to second base, before Johnson drove her home with an RBI double to make it 3-2.
  • The lead only expanded in the third inning, as Jennings walked and Tovar and Ruiz each singled to load the bases with nobody out.
  • EJ Joyner delivered another big blow to the Aggies with a two-run double, with an additional third potential run thrown out at the plate.
  • Joyner would ultimately come home on an outfield error shortly thereafter and San Diego led 6-2 at the changeover.
  • It appeared that the Aggies would be able to get back into the game, as they tallied a run and loaded the bases with one out in the third.
  • However, Giaime generated a ground out to herself to turn a 1-2-3 double play and end the inning.
  • Johnson's huge day would continue in the fourth inning, as she launched a solo home run to the opposite field and extended the Torero lead to 7-3.
  • In the fifth inning, the Toreros closed out the game, as Joyner and Johnson notched singles to put runners on the corners with two outs.
  • Roberts came through with a two-RBI triple down the right field line to extend the lead to 9-3.
  • The very next batter was Jennings, who launched a two-run blast to center field to put San Diego in run rule territory with an 11-3 lead.
  • Giaime would close out the win in the fifth, generating a pair of ground ball outs in high-altitude Las Cruces, N.M., to complete the frame.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • Amanda Limon's hitting streak ended at 14 games, matching the program record set by Olivia Sandusky (2017) and Mary Grabowski (2016).
  • With a double in the win, Johnson (14) matched the third-best single season doubles total in program history, tying Tatum Schultz (2016), Taylor Hensley (2012) and Kathleen Bonja (2005). Next up is Sara Silveyra (17 – 2019) in second.
  • Johnson also became the first Torero to tally a four-hit game since Alexia Torculas on Mar. 11, 2022 against CSUN.
  • San Diego has home runs in four of their last five games after just two in the previous 34 games.

NEXT UP
  • The Toreros return home to end the non-conference slate, hosting California Baptist on Tuesday, Apr. 2 at 4 p.m., at the USD Softball Complex.
