Women’s Basketball Drops Narrow Decision to Pacific in WCC Tournament

LAS VEGAS – The San Diego women's basketball program (9-22, 4-12 WCC) came up just shy in the WCC Tournament second round, falling 72-66 to Pacific (17-13, 8-8 WCC) on Friday afternoon at the Orleans Arena.

Kylie Horstmeyer led the Toreros by matching a career-high with 18 points. Kasey Neubert added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Harsimran Kaur finished with a career-high 14 rebounds in the loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a wild, back-and-forth contest that featured 15 lead changes, both sides got off to strong starts on the offensive end.
  • San Diego shot just over 57 percent from the field in the first quarter, as Veronica Sheffey shined early.
  • The sophomore scored seven of the team's first nine points and after a Neubert three pointer, the two sides were tied at 12-12.
  • After a 5-0 run by Pacific, San Diego answered with a 7-0 run to lead 19-17 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Pacific jumped back in front by four points, but the Toreros had another answer, as Kaur tallied six quick points and put the Toreros back up 35-32.
  • At the break, the two sides would enter all square at 36-36.
  • A 12-4 run by the Tigers out of the break appeared to be enough to pull away, but the Toreros would not give in.
  • Horstmeyer got hot and scored seven of nine consecutive Torero points to take a 49-48 lead with 2:06 left in the third quarter.
  • After ending the third quarter tied at 53-53, San Diego tried to deliver a knockout punch and jumped ahead 62-57 with 5:34 remaining in the game.
  • However, the Tigers would claw their way back into the game and get a key steal and basket to retake the lead at 67-65 with 1:32 remaining.
  • That would prove to be enough for Pacific, who sealed the game at the free throw line.

TORERO TIDBITS
  • With 158 assists on the season, Sheffey finishes with the fourth-highest single season total in program history and the most by any Torero since 2008.
  • Her 5.1 assists per game also rank fourth all-time on the single season list.
  • Neubert finished her Torero career with 626 rebounds over three seasons, which ranks ninth all-time at San Diego.
  • In addition, her 9.6 rebounds per game finish third all-time on the single season rebounding list at San Diego and is the highest mark since 2015.
  • Neubert also finishes ninth all-time at USD in defensive rebounds (391) and ninth all-time in offensive rebounds (235).
