Toreros Pound Pilots, Make Statement in 11th Straight Win

Randall throws seven strong, Christian homers twice as San Diego beats first-place Portland 10-4 at Joe Etzel Field

PORTLAND — A pair of home runs from Jakob Christian combined with a powerful pitching performance from starter Josh Randall led San Diego baseball (22-10, 8-2 WCC) to a commanding 10-4 win over Portland (20-11, 6-1 WCC) on Friday night at Joe Etzel Field, earning the Toreros their eleventh consecutive victory while dealing the Pilots their first WCC loss of 2024.

Randall did not allow a single hit through his first 6.1 innings on the mound, which allowed the San Diego bats to claim an early 8-0 lead after the fifth inning, giving enough cushion for Conner Thurman to finish things out for USD by pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth inning.

Christian earned his third multi-homer game of the year by crushing two longballs — a three-run shot in the fifth and a solo blast in the ninth — to lead the San Diego offense. He finished his night with a season-high five RBIs, three hits, and two runs scored.

EARLY AND OFTEN
  • Dustin Allen knocked a two-RBI single to center field in the top of the third inning to score Angelo Peraza and Will Worthington — who reached on a pair of doubles — getting San Diego on the board early.
  • Jack Costello continued the third-inning rally by sending another two-RBI single into center field to score Justin DeCriscio and Allen.
  • As the eighth hitter of the third inning for USD, Jakob Christian knocked an RBI double into left field which plated Costello and gave San Diego an early 5-0 lead after the third inning of play.
  • After Costello and Smith reached base on a fielder's choice and a single in the fifth inning, Christian continued his hot streak by blasting a three-run homer over the left-center wall at Joe Etzel Field, making it 8-0 after five frames.
  • The Pilots responded in the bottom of the seventh inning with an RBI groundout and a three-run home run to cut the USD lead in half at 8-4.
  • Peraza, Allen, and DeCriscio got the eighth inning started with three straight singles, the last one from DeCriscio being an RBI single to add on another run for USD, making it 9-4.
  • Christian crushed his second home run of the game in the top of the ninth inning — this time a solo shot off of Joe Etzel Field's scoreboard in right field — to give San Diego a 10-4 lead that it would not relinquish.
RANDALL ROCKS
  • Randall got the start on the mound for USD and did not allow a hit through his first six innings on the hill. He finished his night with seven innings pitched, surrendering four runs, with eight strikeouts and just two walks.
  • He then made way for Conner Thurman out of the bullpen, who finished the job on the mound for USD by pitching scoreless eighth and ninth innings.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Randall earned the win on Friday, moving him to 2-2 in 2024 as he collected his second consecutive victory for the Toreros.
  • Eight USD batters registered at least one hit in Friday's victory, with six of those players earning multi-hit games.
  • Christian's fifth and ninth-inning home runs were his twelfth and thirteenth of the year, maintaining his team-high in that category.
  • His 3-for-4 mark on Friday also moves his hit streak to 10 consecutive games.
  • Thurman's pair of scoreless innings marked his eleventh consecutive scoreless multi-inning outing.
  • Justin DeCriscio's 3-for-5 performance at the plate is his third game of the 2024 season that he has recorded three or more hits.
  • The Toreros have now won eleven straight games and have prevailed in 15 of their last 18 contests.
