Baseball Drops 5-1 Decision in Game Two at Portland

Gurevitch homers, Schrier and Frize sharp on mound as Toreros fall to Pilots on Saturday afternoon

PORTLAND — San Diego baseball (22-11, 8-3 WCC) on Saturday afternoon dropped a 5-1 decision to Portland (21-11, 7-1 WCC), snapping an eleven-game win streak as it fell in the middle game of its series against the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field.

Junior first baseman Jack Gurevitch, who is currently batting a team-high .392, sent his sixth home run over the year over Joe Etzel Field's right field wall to record his team's lone run, cutting the Portland lead to 5-1 in the seventh inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pilots took an early 5-0 lead with an RBI single through to the right side in the first, a three-run home run in the second, and another RBI single in the third.
  • The score remained the same until the top of the seventh inning, when Jack Gurevitch blasted a solo homer to put San Diego on the board.
  • USD loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but could not mount a last-chance rally.
ON THE MOUND
  • True freshman righty Logan Reddemann got the start on the mound for San Diego and surrendered five runs through four innings, striking out six, and walking just two.
  • He then made way for Alex Schrier, who pitched a pair of scoreless frames out of the bullpen in the fifth and sixth innings, striking out three and walking one.
  • Drake Frize finished the game on the mound for USD by pitching scoreless seventh and eighth innings, and ended with four strikeouts and no walks.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Will Worthington's two hits on the day marked his seventh multi-hit effort of the season. He also took away a hit on defense with a full extension diving play down the third base line.
  • Gurevitch, who earned USD's only RBI on Saturday, had a hit for the 12th time in his last 13 games.
  • Schrier has now turned in back-to-back scoreless outings.
  • Frize's two innings on Saturday match his longest outing of the season. He has now turned in four consecutive scoreless appearances.
  • Saturday afternoon's defeat marked the Toreros' first loss since Friday, March 22, when it dropped a close 3-2 decision to Saint Mary's at Fowler Park in game two of a doubleheader against the Gaels.
UP NEXT
The Toreros will conclude their series with the Pilots tomorrow afternoon in a crucial conference rubber match. First pitch in the finale from Joe Etzel Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
