Toreros Fall in Finale at Portland

Jakob Christian homers twice, but San Diego can't rally for road series win over Pilots

PORTLAND — San Diego baseball (22-12, 8-4 WCC) on Sunday afternoon dropped the final game of its weekend series at Portland (22-11, 8-1 WCC), suffering a tough 13-4 loss to the Pilots at Joe Etzel Field.

Jakob Christian was a bright spot for the Toreros in Sunday afternoon's defeat, hammering a pair of homers in the fifth and eighth innings to record his second multi-homer game of the series, and his fourth multi-homer game of the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Portland got on the board first with an RBI single in the first inning, a solo homer in the second, and a three-run homer in the third, giving the home team an early 5-0 advantage.
  • After USD loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, Justin DeCriscio recorded an RBI groundout to score Christian and make it 5-1.
  • The Pilots then added five runs in the fourth inning, before Christian responded by booming a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 10-3.
  • Portland added two more runs in the fifth inning, then Christian went deep again, sending a solo shot to left field in the eighth inning to make it 12-4.
  • The Pilots added a run in the bottom of the eighth to give them a 13-4 lead that they would not relinquish.
ON THE MOUND
  • Schapira got the start on the mound for USD on Sunday, and surrendered five earned runs through three innings pitched while striking out two and walking one.
  • Thurman then entered out of the bullpen in relief of Ivran Romero, and turned in two innings, giving up two runs, striking out three and walking none.
  • Austin Smith completed the final three innings on the mound for San Diego, allowing just one earned run, with a strikeout and a walk.
TORERO TIDBITS
  • Jakob Christian led the USD offense with a 2-for-4 afternoon, driving in three while scoring three runs.
  • His pair of home runs on Sunday were his team-best 14th and 15 of the year, and he ultimately homered four times in San Diego's series against Portland.
  • Jack Gurevitch and DeCriscio each recorded a hit on Sunday, going 1-for-3 and 1-for-4, respectively.
  • Smith threw a scoreless sixth and seventh inning.
