Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against LMU, Clinches Series Win

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (15-28, 3-0 WCC) earned a sweep of games two and three against LMU (17-21, 0-3 WCC), winning 5-3 and 3-1 to clinch the series on Saturday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 5, LMU 3
  • After the Toreros took the opener on Friday, the Lions looked to respond early in game two and were able to strike for a run in the first inning, despite pitcher Mo Wimpee allowing no hits.
  • However, the Toreros would not go quietly and responded in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Amanda Limon singled to lead off the inning and Taylor Johnson reached on a hit by pitch, which would set up Tele Jennings.
  • Jennings laced a double to left field to drive home both runners and give San Diego a 2-1 lead.
  • LMU were able to tie the game in the third inning, as a pair of Torero errors allowed the Lions to get their first hit of the game home.
  • Nevertheless, the Toreros offense would immediately respond in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Johnson singled and Joecellia Roberts and Jennings each walked to load the bases for Arisa Tovar.
  • Tovar would drive in two runners with a single down the left field line and gave the Toreros a 4-2 advantage.
  • In the fourth inning, the Toreros kept up the pressure, as EJ Joyner, Carly Ruiz and Limon all tallied singles, before Johnson drove in a run with an RBI single of her own to make it 5-2.
  • Wimpee would polish off a fourth inning of two-hit softball, before giving way to Kelsey Tadlock in the circle.
  • Tadlock breezed through the fifth inning, but LMU would get a run back in the sixth inning to make it 5-3.
  • However, Tadlock finished off a three inning save with a one-two-three frame to secure the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED – SAN DIEGO 3, LMU 1
  • Riding a wave of momentum from game one, the Toreros took an early lead in game two.
  • Limon once again led off the game with a single, but was immediately driven home by a Johnson double to make it 1-0.
  • Roberts extended the lead on the very next at bat, lacing an RBI double of her own and putting San Diego up 2-0.
  • That proved to be exactly what McKenna Braegelmann needed, as she took the run support and held the advantage through her four innings of play in the circle.
  • Braegelmann would work around two hits in the second inning and locked down a scoreless third inning.
  • However, LMU would get a run back in the fourth on a dropped fly ball in short right center field to make it 2-1.
  • Emma Giaime stepped in for Braegelmann in the fifth inning and proved to be composed.
  • Giaime opened the fifth inning with a strikeout and would ultimately tally three hitless frames.
  • The Toreros would get Giaime a key insurance run in the sixth inning, as Jennings led off the inning with a double, before she was driven home by Shawnese Hogue-Lacy with an RBI single.
  • Giaime locked up the save with three straight groundouts in the seventh inning to secure the 3-1 win.

TORERO TIDBITS

  • Roberts extended her on-base streak to 12 consecutive games, while Ruiz extended hers to 10 games.
  • The Toreros have now won four of their last five games against LMU dating back to last season.
