Softball Drops Series Finale to LMU

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego softball program (15-29, 3-1 WCC) came just two innings away from a series sweep, but fell, 6-3 to LMU (18-21, 1-3 WCC) on Sunday afternoon at the USD Softball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED – LMU 6, SAN DIEGO 3
  • In a rematch of Friday's starters, Courtney Rose would once again go head-to-head with reigning WCC Pitcher of the Year Jenna Perez in the series finale.
  • The Toreros were nearly first to strike in the opening inning, as Taylor Johnson was able to get to third base, but was stranded on the base paths.
  • However, as Rose continued to throw scoreless frames, it would be the Toreros to score first in the third inning.
  • Carly Ruiz led off the inning with a walk and Amanda Limon singled to set up Johnson.
  • Johnson ripped a double to left center field and drove home Ruiz to make it 1-0.
  • Arisa Tovar would tack on another run with an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
  • Rose struck out two batters in the fourth inning, before delivering a scoreless fifth inning in the circle.
  • However, after getting the first out of the sixth inning, LMU found momentum with three straight hits and tied the game at 2-2.
  • Two more runs would come home later in the frame to give LMU a 4-2 lead.
  • The Toreros would not go quietly though, as Mikalyn Emanuelli walked to open the sixth.
  • From there, Emanuelli advanced to second base on a wild pitch and third on a groundout, before scoring on another Perez wild pitch to cut the lead to 4-3.
  • However, LMU secured two insurance runs late in the game to seal the win.

  • The Toreros have won back-to-back season series against LMU for the first time since 2016 and 2017.
